SISYPHUS

SHORTLISTED ENTRY ANTEPAVILLION
LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM
2025

Our proposal for this year's Antepavilion draws inspiration from the myth of Sisyphus, echoing the ongoing struggle between Antepavilion and Hackney authorities. By linking this enduring conflict to the ancient Greek saga, the installation becomes a symbolic gesture of persistence and defiance.

At the heart of the piece is a water jet that bursts unexpectedly from the canal once every hour. The stream strikes a sharply defined, triangular roof—an architectural form that serves both as a visual anchor and a symbolic peak. This roof is adorned with fragments salvaged from previous pavilions, embedding the installation with a visible lineage of past interventions.

Constructed entirely from reclaimed materials sourced on site, the structure not only showcases the history of the Hoxton Docks but also transforms into a functional platform for performances, gatherings, and public interaction.

The sporadic fountain animates the canal, creating a moment of disruption that invites reflection—extending beyond the events of the 2021 raids to broader questions of authority, resistance, and the role of public art.
