In Tokyo in 1960, Kiyonori Kikutake and his young accomplices challenged an older Louis Kahn who claimed that, in a school, the classrooms and not the hallways were the master space. The young Metabolists disagreed, claiming that it was the hallways that formed networks between the classrooms and created exciting, enriching encounters for the children. This project sides with Kikutake and company.
This school is a corridor. It is the chance encounters, the child smiling to another, the struggle with the tennis shoe. It is the movements seen in the park below, the murmur and laughter, glimpses of what goes on in the floors above. The classroom may be the backbone, the central nervous system, the brain, but the corridor is the heart.
A structure of red-stained wood. Cylinder-pavilion.The ground floor serves as a flexible container for activity, a public corridor that mediates the urban condition. The entry hall becons with a stair that invites children and teachers up to where there space becomes more focused, lifted from urbanity into their private corridor. That is, their school.
At the other end of the public corridor is the entrance to the gym and the salle rythmique. The latter is the base of a cylinder that connects each floor, its disposition at the ground floor a sort of pavilion in the park.
